Eighty (80%) of learning is visual. One in six children have visual performance problems. A child may have 20/20 vision but still have learning problems due to inefficient visual skills and/or perceptual problems, making it difficult for the child to read and learn.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends all children have a complete vision examination between one and three years of age and again before entering school. It is recommended children to be seen yearly thereafter, even in the absence of symptoms.

Orthokeratology

What is Accelerated Orthokeratology?

Accelerated Orthokeratology(AOK) is a non-surgical treatment procedure to correct myopia(near-sightedness) with a night-wear contact lens mold. Although the mold feels like a regular contact lens, it also gently and quickly reshapes the front surface of the eye known as the cornea. The improved corneal shape means that upon removing the contact lens you will enjoy clear natural vision.

How does AOK work?

A microscopic layer of tears separates the back surface of the cornea. In some areas this layer is approximately 1/10 the width of a human hair! After precise corneal surface measurements are taken, a contact lens can be designed to vary the thickness of the tear layer in a controlled manner. As a result of the tear layer changes, the cornea begins to reshape within hours!

The contact lens molds are worn only while asleep and substantial changes will be noticed in one night. Most visual changes occur rapidly within the first two to seven nights. Stabilization of the new corneal shape occurs over the next two to three months. After treatment is complete, the AOK lenses are worn on a maintenance basis to retain the corneal shape.
