The FYidoctors Eye Exam

We don't push style over substance, we believe in giving every patient a thorough eye exam before we consider what frames and lenses or other vision products would work best for you. Thanks to current technology and investments in comprehensive diagnostic equipment, you can expect to receive a thorough exam - The FYicare Experience - at any of the FYidoctors primary locations across Canada.

1. Pre-Test

A detailed process that gathers all necessary information for the eye doctor prior to the eye exam. This process involves completing a detailed patient history as well as completing a series of standard pre-tests, such as Color Vision, Stereo Acuity (testing for ability to judge depth of space), Non-Contact Tonometry (testing fluid pressure in the eye), Auto Refraction (to obtain the patient prescription), Frequency Doubling Technology (testing for peripheral vision), to name a few. Pre-tests are completed and determined according to each patient’s unique vision needs.

2. Advanced Pre-Test

Pending patient needs, many patients will also go through more advanced testing employing the likes of the Optomap Retinal Scan - which takes an ultra-wide, 200 degree image of the retina, or the Spectralis HRT - which allows our doctors to see all ten layers of your retina and optic nerve in a digital 3-D image with resolution of 1 micron. These diagnostic tools allow our doctors to identify health complications and disease much earlier in their progression, thus helping early diagnosis of diseases such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration and even some forms of cancer.

3. Eye Exam

Many patients think that a visit to the optometrist is just about checking for changes in prescriptions.

Eye exams at FYidoctors are comprised of 3 components:

(1) A thorough assessment of visual acuity and optics,

(2) testing for eye coordination and visual perception and

(3) most importantly, completing an ocular health assessment.

Many patients feel that if they have good vision then their eyes must be healthy, but this is simply not the case. Many forms of eye disease have no symptoms until late stages of the disease when it is often too late. An ocular health assessment detects for potential conditions or disease and may include monitoring, prescribing of a therapeutic agent or referral to an ophthalmologist.

4. Lens Technology

For our many patients requiring vision correction, at the end of each eye exam, our doctors will recommend a selection of lens options specific to the patient’'s unique vision needs. At FYidoctors, the majority of our lenses are Internal Freeform lenses –- the most current lens technology available in today'’s market, custom-made (at our own Canadian based facility) for each individual and their unique vision needs. For a wearer, the difference in quality, clarity, and field of view is significant. FYidoctors has one of the largest selections of 100% Internal Freeform lenses in North America to offer our patients and we are proud to manufacture ZEISS lenses in Canada.

5. Custom Fit

Lastly, after the patient has selected the lens choice best suited for their vision needs, as well as a frame aligned with their unique sense of style, our experienced staff will complete a personalized fitting employing our electronic fitting device called the i.Terminal® 2 (in partnership with Zeiss). The i.Terminal® 2 takes over 20 personalized measurements to make sure that your glasses are fit specifically for your unique shape – including the distance from where the glasses rest on your nose from your face, the natural curvature of your face, and the angle when resting on your nose. Each set of eyes is unique and at FYidoctors, each set of lenses are personalized for your vision needs, including the natural movements of your eyes.

Our Technology

Typical eye exams include an assessment of the eyes to evaluate health and prescription changes. A screening of the retina is critical to verify the health of your eyes. To enable this, most FYidoctors locations now employ an Optomap Retinal Scanner, which provides an ultra-wide, digital image that allows a 200 degree view of the retina in a single capture. This view gives our doctors the ability to assess a MUCH wider area of the retina, including the entire back of the eye, in magnified high resolution. Use of the Optomap Retinal Scanner can enable early detection of common diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and even cancer. The exam is quick, painless, and may not require dilation drops.

Our doctors have been thrilled with the capabilities of Optomap in assisting with detection, monitoring and treatment of eye disease and is included in our comprehensive eye exams.*

Spectralis HRA + OCT

FYidoctors is proud to employ the Spectralis HRA+OCT. This specialized equipment allows our doctors to see all ten layers of your retina and optic nerve in a digital 3-D image with resolution of 1micron (approximately 1/100 the width of a human hair!). This tool has proven to be invaluable in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Utilizing these detailed images allows our doctors to provide a more accurate diagnosis and thus determine appropriate treatment options more efficiently.

Medmont Topography System for Designing Custom Contact Lenses

FYidoctors employ the Medmont Corneal Topography system to assist in designing custom contact lenses. A custom contact lens can mean a better fit with superior vision for patients that have not had success with generic contact lenses or who have eye conditions that require highly customized contact lens designs. Medmont Corneal Topography is also essential in designing contact lenses for patients that are have keratoconus, had previous eye surgery, or have corneal curvatures outside of normal limits.
